Research shows that back between 1860-1870 a downrigger was found locally to Niagara Falls and the Salmon River area. It pointed to a Rod & Reel Maker from Brooklyn, New York, as the father of the modern downrigger.

Prior to this time, it was thought that Great Lake Michigan anglers invented the first downrigger. The Walker Downrigger was founded in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Randy Ford and his brother purchased the Walker company in 1994 and moved it to Stayner, Ontario.
